Fire Hydrants, Hose Reels and Fire Extinguishers

Fire hydrant, hose reel and booster systems are an essential safety measure. They give fire-fighters access to a controlled supply of water and access for the occupiers to select and use the appropriate size and type of fire extinguisher for the hazard intended. Total Fire Solutions specialise in the design, installation and commissioning of all fixed and portable fire equipment, providing strategic coverage to your premises and comply to all relevant Australian Standards and Building Code of Australia requirements including:

  • AS 2419 Fire Hydrant Installations
  • AS 2941 Fixed Fire Protection Installations
  • AS 1221  Fire Hose Reels
  • AS 1851 Maintenance of Fire Protection Equipment

How do fire hydrants and hose reels work?

A Fire Hydrant is a connection point that firefighters use to tap into a water supply to supplement their emergency water tanks. Fire hydrants are strategically placed and highlighted to be easily accessed in case of a fire emergency.

Hydrants are required for larger commercial premises. It's important to ensure your fire equipment is compliant so the fire brigade can connect and activate and/or boost the water supply in case of an emergency.

Hose reels are used for short-range fire fighting applications inside buildings. They're typically 35m long with a 25L/minute flow rate. They're permanently connected to the water supply and easy to operate by first responders or the general public. In order to ensure compliance with Australian fire hose reel regulations, the installation and maintenance of fire hose reels should be done by certified fire protection specialists.

Types of Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is a portable fire fighting device used to extinguish or control small fires in an emergency situation. It's not for use on large, out of control fires.

It's important to have the right kind of extinguisher on hand for the type of fire you're most likely to encounter on your premises. For example, a water extinguisher will could be dangerous, if used on an electrical or fuel fire. There are five (5) main fire extinguisher types:

  1. Water for wood, paper and textiles
  2. Foam for wood, paper, textiles and flammable liquids
  3. Dry Powder for wood, paper, textiles, flammable liquids, live electrical equipment and gaseous fires
  4. CO2  for flammable liquids and live electrical equipment
  5. Wet Chemical for animal fat and vegetable oil fires
